Peter Heding: Smooth Squat Tomato Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-362-0314
With a shaping style steeped in the Danish artisan tradition, Peter Heding is among Denmark's premier artisan pipe makers. His résumé is elevated by tutelage from Tom Eltang, and Heding's quality craftsmanship is matched by his artistic eye, often drawing inspiration from masters before him combined with his own creative vision.
A beautiful example of freehand shaping, this Tomato rendition reveals Heding's consideration of the briar's natural grain when determining the pipe's shape: Vertical grain perfectly follows the bowl's broad waistline, while birdseye populates the expansive rim and fanning grain matches the shank's trajectory. With a lifted heel and a touch of flare toward the rim, the bowl displays a touch of Acorn shaping while still remaining more broad than it is tall, and the shank harmonizes wonderfully with the stem as ridgelines along the bowl curl into the stem base to define the upward-flicking half saddle. All dressed in an alluring contrast stain, this piece is a stunningly balanced composition in shaping, grain, and engineering.
