Jared Coles: Partially Sandblasted Blowfish with Bakelite (1725)
Product Number: 002-738-0024
Quite a striking take on the Blowfish shape, this piece from Jared Cole is, at once, as soft and supple as a river stone, yet as dynamic and forward-rushing as an F-22. Rather than following an asymmetrical, Tokutomi-esque approach to the cross-section, Jared's brought the rim to a sharp, singular ridge perfectly centered along the fore of the bowl, creating an almost arrowhead look when viewed from above. From the left flank, it's all smooth, soft curves and gentle contours, the shape's hard lines belied by the dark, understated sandblast; over on the right, however, he's kept the fluting lines more pronounced, using them to frame great swaths of contrast-stained, smooth-polished birdseye. From a practical perspective, it's actually quite comfortable in hand, the deep, sweeping transition offering a neat rest for the crook of the index finger. And the grain's simply stellar all around.
