Jared Coles: Sandblasted Horn with Horn (1825)

Product Number: 002-738-0042

Sometimes shape is everything. I have a Billiard that makes me happy more by its silhouette than any other aspect of it. I think this piece would be the same. The curves are as natural and sweeping as one could hope. The undercurve is a long gradual curve, with the topside curve flicking inward on the near side of the bowl, and it's all extended with the horn fitment, which expands further to match the domed rim and offers a bit of color contrast against the black palette of the stummel. Ring grain abounds, rising gently from the heel to the ridge at the rim. Easy in the hand no matter how it's held, the thumb drapes effortlessly over the top of the shank, whether left or right. Very Danish in character, this Coles Horn may be reminiscent of various Danish schools, but it reflects North American proportional standards and a modern aesthetic of utilizing proven disparate design elements.
