Jared Coles: Sandblasted Billiard with Ivorite (1906)
Product Number: 002-738-0049
Jared Coles's portfolio is saturated with lovely, organic, often bent pipes, making the times we see pieces like this straight Billiard all the more special and exciting. The American carver has taken inspiration from the Danish school in this piece, tapering the bowl toward the rim and, likewise, the shank toward the stem. Arrow straight of form and slender throughout, the tall bowl is lent even more visual weight thanks to the sleek shank and use of a trim saddle stem, yet the whole piece remains quite lightweight and still offers a generously deep chamber. While the dark, glossy sandblast is a bit deeper and more textured than if we were to see it in the hands of a Danish carver, the use of ivorite at the shank end is a convention we've seen often from the Danish tradition, particularly in the work of Hans "Former" Nielsen. Combined with the rounded rim, the creamy ivorite mount adds a sense of elegance to the profile while also contrasting the dark color palette and enhancing the supple lines and Danish appeal of this lovely piece.-Truett Smith
