Jared Coles: Sandblasted Billiard (1905)
Product Number: 002-738-0050
Every so often, Jared Coles will depart from his conventional fare of bent, organic pieces and render a true classic such as this straight Billiard. This rendition is perhaps the most traditional iteration we've ever received from the American carver, drawing inspiration from the Danish tradition and being thoroughly classic of design. A svelte transition and slightly lifted heel give way to a tall Billiard bowl, crowned with a lighter-stained, smooth polished rim to heighten the Danish aesthetic. Quite compact overall, it measures in at under five inches in length yet still offers up a chamber well within Group 4 size. With crisply sandblasted straight grain overlapping rippling growth rings, the finish here is exquisite from Jared, offering up a stimulating texture and warm, auburn-tinged contrast stain. There's so much to love about this piece, and it's always a joy to see artisan carver's returning to pipe chart standards, especially when the results are as well-executed and beautiful as they are in this offering from Coles.-Truett Smith
