Jared Coles: Smooth Acorn (1958)
Product Number: 002-738-0055
Jared Coles and John Klose worked together on the J&J brand of artisan pipes for eight years before amenably deciding to pursue their crafts individually. Jared has continued to advance his pipe making even beyond that firm foundation, and now carves pipes at a rarefied altitude of compositional skill, as is evident with this offering: a dynamic bent Acorn.
With clear Danish influence, the shank of this Acorn extends from a tight transition to expand with a tear-drop cross section toward the stem, a technique most often ascribed to Lars Ivarsson but now often used by artisan carvers around the world. The end of the shank is gently domed, and smooth save for a subtle kiss of plateau along the upper section.
The bowl is classically Acorn, with its sweeping, upward-inclined forward heel and organically rounded rim, itself treated to the same subtle plateau accent as the end of the shank. The stain is a dark chestnut, with blonde contrast undertones to illuminate some stunning vertical grain all around the bowl. One ridgeline extends from the end of shank along the bottom right and into the bowl, where it curves upward, complementing the bowl shape and gradually dissipating into soft smoothness. It's a sturdy pipe, easily conforming to the hand, and its combination of natural beauty in the briar and consummate skill in the carver render a collector piece of impressive stature.- Chuck Stanion
