Jared Coles: Smooth Horn Tobacco Pipe

It's hard to understand how the mind of an artisan can combine smooth-flowing lines with structured ridgelines so seamlessly, but here Jared Coles does just that in the form of an elegant, smooth Horn. In profile, sweeping curves dominate the upper and lower defining lines, while from a perspective of above and below, a more dynamically structured aspect reveals itself with straight lines and asymmetry of the bowl. The ridgelines are crisply sharp in contrast to the evident curvature, riding the side flank is as they arc upward to the domed rim, which is offset in an angled, Reuleaux triangle. The shank flares dramatically as it reaches its domed end, where a curved, harmonizing expansion ring introduces the flat saddle mouthpiece. The grain is as stunning as the shaping, combining with the forward inclination of the bowl to produce a dynamically intriguing Horn with distinct character.
