Jared Coles: Partially Sandblasted Koi with Boxwood
Product Number: 002-738-0064
Presented here is a Blowfish rendition from Jared Coles that he's dubbed a "Koi." It features the characteristic design cues of the Japanese Blowfish shape, but Coles has elongated the form in slender disposition, much like that of its namesake fish. When viewed from above, the center of the bowl is marked by ridgelines along either side of the rim, informing the Blowfish's central panel, with the left side flicking outward at the transition into the shape's oft-seen "fin." In this case, though, Jared features only one along the transition, adding asymmetry and aligning with the shape's slight rightward trajectory.
The upward curling shank is stretched in profile, much like the koi fish's elongated form, and while some of the bowl's accenting ridgelines extend through it, the shank remains more rounded with a kiss of plateau commending the face. Dressed in a dual finish, the stummel alternates between a dark-stained sandblast and a rich, honey-blonde stain: the left flank completely blasted, while only a long, trim section appears on the left. The shank remains mostly smooth and lighter of stain, easing the color palette into the base of the split stem, which is fashioned from pale boxwood. Such a mouthpiece bespeaks Jared's engineering skill, and it pairs beautifully with the intricate shaping and finishing work of the stummel, testifying to Coles' skill as both an artist and craftsman.-Truett Smith
