Jared Coles: Partially Sandblasted Bent Dublin Sitter

Product Number: 002-738-0072

American carver Jared Coles often combines elements from different design schools, drawing on a wide array of shaping cues to bring us pipes that are clearly his own. This bent Dublin fits that tradition well, displaying a prominent, flared bowl surging forward in posture counterbalanced by a nearly vertical, teardrop-shaped shank. I love the way Jared finds the grain and follows it wherever it goes, a technique on full display here as manages to capture ring grain all around the bowl as well as the shank, rippling growth rings presented with a moderate-depth sandblast for a surface both stimulating and comfortable. The rim is softly inflated in the Danish tradition, but only partly smoothed, allowing the natural plateau pattern to add character and uniqueness. The smoothed sections on the rim are stained a dark auburn hue for contrast, an aesthetic which is mirrored well by the inflated shank face. The smoothed and flattened heel is packed with birdseye, and allows the pipe to sit stably, with a lithe cumberland stem towering above for balance. Quite a vertical Nosewarmer, it allows for several different comfortable hand positions and demands to be stared at and smoked, in no particular order.
