Jared Coles: Sandblasted Calabash with Silver Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-738-0097
Smokingpipes has hosted an American Pipe-Making Exposition annually since 2015, allowing some of the country's most renowned artisans to display some of their best, most creative work. Each year, there's a specific theme, with the 2022 motif focusing on Calabash engineering, as represented by this vibrant entry from Jared Coles.
The California resident has studied under such preeminent American artisans as Jeff Gracik, Adam Davidson, and Todd Johnson and fashions his pipes from vetted and sourced Mediterranean briar. This compact Calabash boasts many intriguing elements and is notable for its straight shank and stem, which is less common than the sinuously sweeping, tapering versions. The bowl is shaped a bit like a Rhodesian as it's gently rounded and domed up top. In this fetching interpretation, however, the removable cap and stem are made of resin cast with aluminum shavings for a lively, crackled aesthetic, making this pipe even more unique. The artisan has fashioned this piece so the cooling chamber is housed within the bowl, the engineering ready to render a cooler, drier smoke when favored blends are ready to be enjoyed. The shank tapers subtly toward a trim silver ring accent, lending a playful dose of flash to the composition before the saddle stem takes over. The stummel is dressed in a jet-black sandblast, showcasing some choice growth rings, the dark tone contrasting the whimsical nature of the cap and mouthpiece.
