Jared Coles: Partially Sandblasted Acorn with Ebony and Juma Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-738-0101

Jared Coles' history with pipes starts at his childhood, having been enamored with them ever since the first time he saw his grandfather smoking one. Appropriately, then, he came into the fold as a pipe smoker as soon as he turned 18, discovering the artisan world of pipes while he was in college and further engrossing himself in his passion. He formed the J&J Pipes workshop with friend John Klose after experimenting with pipe making himself, and for eight years they worked together before amicably dissolving the partnership to focus on his own work. The breadth of styles that Coles has explored spans the world, and he draws inspiration from all of these schools of design when crafting his pipes, something which can be seen in this Acorn.

The Acorn isn't necessarily a rare shape from Coles, though this example in particular is an excellent example of his present renditions of the shape, exemplifying the smoothly curved and organic elements which these pipes possess. The general outline of this shape is a wonderfully gestural one, plunging from the button into the shank before sweeping upward at the transition and lifting into a forward-urging bowl. The transition itself here is wide enough to drape a digit, marking the start of a flared and gracefully lifted shank that expands to a rounded accent of ebony wood. Up front, the bowl takes on a comfortably bulbous shape, with ample rounding at the fore and aft, while supple curves contour the flanks for a comfortable feel in hand that additionally lends the piece a plump, organic aesthetic. At the right side of the stummel, we see a striking separation from the softer look of the left, with a wrapping ridgeline starting at the shank end and following the stummel's outline all the way around the bowl and fore, creating some understated angularity while additionally marking an area that's crisply sandblasted and stained an inky black. This finish contrasts the vibrant auburn stain of the left flank, with the black ebony accent at the junction and the vibrant off-white hues of the Supertusk Juma stem introducing even further contrast.
