Jared Coles: Partially Sandblasted Tomato Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-738-0115
Jared Coles' history with pipes starts at his childhood, having been enamored with them ever since the first time he saw his grandfather smoking one. Appropriately, then, he came into the fold as a pipe smoker as soon as he turned 18, discovering the artisan world of pipes while he was in college and further engrossing himself in his passion. The breadth of styles that Coles has explored spans the world, and he draws inspiration from all of these schools of design when crafting his pipes.
The Tomato is a shape which Coles has crafted with a great deal of stylistic variance over the years, and it's also one which we've seen from him only a handful of times in the past, making it a rare profile indeed. This specific imagining of the Tomato is perhaps Coles' most striking and unique, with a thoroughly Japanese look that speaks to his talent for crafting pipes which draw on design schools from around the world. This is an extremely compact pipe, measuring in at just over four and a half inches long, and a good deal of that length is thanks to the stem, which is nearly as long as the stummel itself. Said stem is a jet-black vulcanite saddle whose base is accented with a broad expansion ring, a feature that highlights the separation between shank and stem and mirrors the shank's own flaring build. Said shank ebbs out of a wide transition which leaves plenty of room to drape a digit and features an ovoid shaping which is lined on either flank with a firm ridge, gradually expanding out to a broad face. This face is surrounded by a sloping panel with a smooth finish, the face itself showcasing a lenticular outline which slants out to the right side with an undulating demeanor. The ridges at the flanks of the shank descend beneath the transition and create a pronounced, protruding ridge reminiscent of a collar for the underside of the bowl. This bowl stands atop a rounded heel and boasts an impressive breadth, with a supple, squat curvature through its walls' rise and taper to the rim, its shaping compressed at the fore and aft for a uniquely ovoid shape. Most of the stummel is dressed in a crisp, dark sandblast, while the underside of the shank, shank face, and rim are finished in a light, smoky smooth finish.-John McElheny
