Jody Davis: Sandblasted Bent Dublin with Cocobolo (Friar) (A16) (05) Tobacco Pipe

Like his Long Shank Acorn and Calla Lilly shapes, this generous form from Jody Davis is defined by a single sweeping line for most of the composition, somewhat tubular in profile, with only the slightest hint of flare readily evident at the poised bowl. I say readily evident, as the shank sports an acute flare as well, only here Jody's made use of an excellent teardrop line at the right flank, rendering said flare only visible when viewed from the top or bottom. The feel in hand is substantial and stimulating, with a sandblasted treatment serving to coax an incredible, fully-concentric display of ring-grain from rim to bit. And speaking of the bit: Jody's upped the ante even further, fitting this one with a mount and stem-base of light, warm-hued and dark red walnut cocobolo, an accent, I am told, that's no easy task to fashion. A beautifully playful piece here.
