John He: Smooth Full Bent Apple Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-818-0001
A student of not just the Danish school, but Tokutomi's careful appreciation for details, John He's pipes tend toward classic renditions of older shapes, with subtle tweaking giving them additional character. Here we have a plump, well-rounded bent Apple, its bowl supple enough to fill the hand quite pleasantly, and dressed in a fantastic display of flame grain. Upon closer inspection, you'll find John He's marks — an ever-so-slight asymmetry to the bowl, with the right flank slightly more plump than the other; a spot of natural plateau left at the base for a hint of texture, as well as an appreciation for the material itself; a soft wavering of the stem base, hand-cut to match the line of the shank end in a natural continuation of the form. It's a sleek presentation, each detail well thought out, and neatly balanced to show He's skill, while keeping the overall focus on the whole of the piece.- Rachel DuBose
