John He: Smooth Long Shank Pear Tobacco Pipe

The Pear is the less-often-seen cousin of the Acorn, softer in appearance, with less of the sharp heel that is often paired to the latter. Here, John He has rendered it with a plump, softly-rounded bowl, its steep taper not coming to a sharp base, but flowing smoothly into the slightly tucked transition, the shank flaring once more at its end. It's been finished in a warm, darker contrast, the lines of its flame grain vivid on both bowl and shank, with just a small spot of natural plateau at the rim — not just to add texture, but to echo the plateau shank face at the rear. To further emphasize its lean proportions, it's been topped with a sleek saddle stem, the base of which has been angled and cut to gently waver with the end of the shank, a style of continuing the lines of a piece that He seems to accomplish with aplomb.
