John He: Smooth Long Shank Bent Dublin Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-818-0005
A softer sort of bent Dublin, this John He has less in common with the trumpeting, large-bowled Danish pieces we might think of, and instead brings a more compact bowl to the table. With a soft, "inflated" roundness to its rim, as well as a lifting heel and long, flaring shank, it strikes a stunning image in profile. Up close, it is even more detailed, from the lively licks of flame surrounding the bowl, to hints of plateau left to dot the rim with texture, and even the stem — its base has been hand-cut to match the angle of the shank face, effectively "capping" the design without losing any of the charm or organic asymmetry of its angular, plateau-covered face. It's this elegant use of detailing that has set John He and his pipes apart, each detail giving the overall piece a subdued sense of natural beauty that is difficult to produce without both skilled eyes and hands.- Rachel DuBose
