Ken Dederichs: Smooth Mushroom with Boxwood
Product Number: 002-806-0015
The Mushroom design is most readily characterized by a ridgelined bowl with a domed rim rising above the equatorial hard line. Jess Chonowitsch renders a striking version — rather Horn-like in the gentle transition and flaring curve from shank to rim. Ken Dederichs's iteration here, though, deviates from Chonowitsch's signature, catering more toward designs we've seen from Cornelius Mänz.
The form takes the shape of a Rhodesian, the bowl being more pronounced and separate from the shank compared to Chonowitsch's Mushroom. Unlike a traditional Rhodesian, however, the bowl is devoid of beadlines and the rim above is gently domed rather than crisply tapered. Such differences imbue this piece from Ken with a more organic, softly inclined disposition, hearkening more to the Danish tradition compared to the firm lines and rigidity often seen in English and French pipes.
Dederichs has balanced the composition beautifully. The shank is extended by a boxwood ferrule, the face domed to echo the bulbous profile of the bowl. When viewed from above, the boxwood also flares subtly at the end to add an elegant, flourishing touch. Affably chubby and conveniently compact, it's marked by a consistent bottom curve, fitting comfortably in hand, and is dressed in a contrast stain, the lighter hues of which complement the pale yellow of the boxwood.-Truett Smith
