Ken Dederichs: Smooth Volcano Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-806-0016

The Volcano is an inherently versatile and dynamic design, exuding a strong sense of fluid momentum even when lent heavier proportions. In this rendition, Ken Dederichs has accentuated both with grace. When viewed from the smoker's perspective, the form's broad nature is on full display, the domed, lenticular shank wide and flared as the flanking ridgelines wrap the base of the stout-walled bowl. In profile, though, that muscularity is belied, replaced with a strong sense of forward cant and flow as the ridgelines curl upward into the bowl's fore. All this is enough to warrant praise, Ken's exquisite shaping on impressive display. However, the Germany-based, Japanese carver goes a step further, attributing a slight degree of asymmetry to the orientation of the ridgelines that separate bowl from heel. It's a touch that's not readily apparent at first yet once noticed, can't be ignored, making for a thoroughly unique piece that becomes more and more lovable the more it's examined. Combine that with a stunning contrast stain and dense sea of birdseye all along the bottom, and this is a true standout in any collection.
