Ken Dederichs: Smooth Bent Egg
Product Number: 002-806-0025
This gestural, sinuously bent Egg exemplifies Ken Dederichs' appreciation for organic designs and his ability to effortlessly merge supple curves with stout proportions. The bowl's canted disposition lends this piece a touch of forward-urging momentum and is a stylistic shaping cue the Germany-based, Japanese carver often incorporates in his work. It creates some added dynamism in profile, while the subtle cheeking around the transition maintains the bowl's curvaceous character and makes it even more irresistible when held in hand.
The thick shank continues the robust precedent established by the bowl, quickly curling upward to meet the gracefully downturned mouthpiece. The expansion disc along the stem base mirrors the brass inset ring along the bulging shank face offers some negative space that directs attention toward the stummel. Along with the affable curves and balanced proportions of this composition, there's a wealth of stunning grain to admire around the stummel. Streaks of lively flame grain envelop the bowl's flanks while whorls of birdseye dominate the entire underside, each tendril and speck made even more vivid thanks to the rich, walnut contrast stain.- Jeffery Sitts
