Ken Dederichs: Partially Sandblasted Volcano
Product Number: 002-806-0027
As a pipe shape, the Volcano is inherently dynamic and versatile, often exuding a strong degree of fluidity and implied momentum even when the design is rendered in robust proportions. In this rendition from Ken Dederichs, the Germany-based, Japanese carver ably demonstrates how beautifully stout dimensions and flowing lines can combine so seamlessly. When examined from the smoker's perspective, the design's broad nature is readily apparent as the lens-shaped shank is remarkably wide and flares outward while the flanking ridgelines wrap around the base of the hearty bowl. In profile however, that muscularity is seemingly contradicted, replaced with a strong sense of forward cant and flow as the ridgelines curl upward into the bowl's fore.
The dual finish on this composition also warrants praise as it ably demonstrates Dederichs' gifted eye for reading the grain on any given briar block. The majority of the stummel is dressed in a dark, low-profile sandblast that has unveiled a wealth of undulating grain while the slanted, slightly convex rim and the entire base are left smooth to showcase an array of stunning birdseye. The bulging shank face is also smooth-polished and slightly tilted for a touch of asymmetry that's extremely subtle but wonderfully executed. The expansion disc along the stem base mirrors the brass inset ring that surrounds the mortise, offering added reinforcement and creating a mount-style tenon configuration.- Jeffery Sitts
