Ken Dederichs: Sandblasted Bent Brandy
Product Number: 002-806-0029
Originally from Japan and currently based in Stuttgart, Germany, Ken'ichiro Dederichs often creates pipes that reflect an appreciation for the soft lines and inviting curves found in Danish pipe making. However, he also tends to imbue his designs with a strong degree of robustness, with all of those elements on display in this bent Brandy. The bowl is tall and affably curvaceous, subtly tapering from its plump base toward the rim. Said rim is polished smooth to highlight the pin pricks of birdseye that adorn its surface, contrasting against the rest of the stummel's dark, low-profile sandblast. The sandblasted finish is reserved and subtle, yet has unveiled a nice array of tight, undulating grain around the bowl's flanks. Cheeking around the transition maintains the bowl's shaping while the shank curves gently upward to meet the saddle stem which offers an ever-so-slight downturn to accommodate hands-free smoking. It all results in a wonderfully minimalist smoking instrument that bespeaks Ken Dederichs' stylistic range and talent as an artisan pipe maker.- Jeffery Sitts
