Ken Dederichs: Smooth Bent Apple

Product Number: 002-806-0043

Ken'ichiro Dederichs-Uchida is a Germany-based, Japanese pipe maker who goes by the name Ken Dederichs. He maintains a low annual production rate that prioritizes quality over quantity, presenting us with bespoke creations. His style is organic, often giving us creative interpretations of classic designs and inspired by Japanese pipe design — always rendered with precision and great attention to detail.

This bent Apple is one such take, a plump, sinuous design that delights palm and gaze alike with its curvaceous perfection and impeccable grain. It's difficult to nail the grain orientation so well on a well-rounded pipe, but Ken has done a bang-up job of it, no question, bringing out stunning cross grain striations on both flanks and a wealth of dense birdseye that wraps all the way around the front of the bowl and up the shank's underside. It all looks quite remarkable under a vibrant contrast stain and smooth finish, a myriad of uniform organicism that perfectly complements the precise rounding of the bowl and flared shank. A hand-cut vulcanite saddle stem finishes the piece with a dash of elegant simplicity and very slight downturn, performing its function perfectly without distracting from the brilliant stummel.
