Ken Dederichs: Smooth Bent Apple Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-806-0071

Japanese-born artisan Ken'ichiro Dederichs-Uchida spent the first part of his professional life as an architect in his native country, his education in the field and years of experience informing his evolution as a pipe maker. Dederichs began carving in 2005 as a hobby and in 2007 moved to Germany where, a year later, he realized that pipe making had become his true passion, taking on the craft as a full-time career. Dederichs' perspective on design is truly a singular one, interpreting old world shapes through the lenses of both the Japanese and Danish schools, though this Apple showcases his more modern sensibilities.

We've seen a number of bent Apple iterations from Dederichs in the past, though this particular rendition strikes me as being one of the most reserved, with an understated, graceful silhouette that yet offers plenty of intriguing shaping detail. The transition is wide, wide enough to drape a digit, and it gives way to a gently lifted shank which extends toward a firm ridge that denotes the face, the shank itself possessed of an expressive flare horizontally. The effect keeps the shank looking rather slender in profile, though affords the composition a wealth of muscularity from the smoker's perspective, and this variety in form keeps the pipe feeling organic and fluid. The shank face is domed, and it's been inlaid with a brass ring which reinforces the push-style mount of the demurely curved, black vulcanite saddle stem, additionally allowing for easy cleaning and disassembly. Up front, the bowl showcases the supple rounding that an apple should, though it's been topped with a broad, dipped rim which is surrounded by a firm ridge. The rim's rise at the middle pulls the eye to the fore, and its relative firmness compared to the rest of the bowl lends this piece a lovely conjunction of textures. A sweeping heel supports the bowl and grants its fore wall a significant degree of curvature, the walls themselves taking on a rounded flare to a rather high-set waist before tapering slightly to the rim. Dressed in a warm, rich, mahogany-hued stain, the stummel is wrapped with flame grain through the shank and around the bowl, with the rim and underside displaying ample birdseye.
