Ken Dederichs: Sandblasted Bent Apple Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-806-0074

Japanese-born artisan Ken'ichiro Dederichs-Uchida spent the first part of his professional life as an architect in his native country, his education in the field and years of experience informing his evolution as a pipe maker. Dederichs began carving in 2005 as a hobby and in 2007 moved to Germany where, a year later, he realized that pipe making had become his true passion, taking on the craft as a full-time career. Dederichs' perspective on design is truly a singular one, interpreting old world shapes through the lenses of both the Japanese and Danish schools, though this bent Apple showcases his more modern sensibilities.

We've seen a number of bent Apple iterations from Dederichs in the past, though this particular rendition strikes me as being especially reserved, with an understated, graceful silhouette that yet offers plenty of intriguing shaping detail. The transition is wide, wide enough to drape a digit, and it gives way to a gently lifted shank which extends toward a firm ridge that denotes the face, the shank itself possessed of a subtle curl and consistent, cylindrical shaping. Though not expressly or obviously tapering, the arc of the shank is afforded a distinctly slender look thanks to the gracile silhouette of the demurely curved saddle stem to which it's paired. Up front, the bowl showcases the supple rounding that an Apple should, though it's been topped with a broad, subtly dipped rim which is surrounded by a firm ridge. The rim's indention at the fore and aft pulls the eye to the bowl, and its relative firmness compared to the rest of the bowl lends this piece a lovely conjunction of textures. A sweeping heel supports the bowl and grants its fore wall a significant degree of curvature, the walls themselves taking on a rounded flare to a rather high-set waist before tapering slightly to the rim. Dressed in a crisp sandblast and inky stain, the stummel showcases a rippling pattern of ring grain cascading down the bowl, with a great degree of contrast offered by the smooth stain of the rim: showcasing a basin of birdseye.
