Ken Dederichs: Sandblasted Acorn Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-806-0079

Japanese-born, Germany-based carver Ken Dederichs tends to fashion sculptural, Freehand-inspired compositions; though with this Acorn, he embraces a more traditional aesthetic, forgoing his stylized organicism for something more streamlined and balanced. Up front, a supple, full-bodied bowl stands atop a lifted heel and grows thick walls that take on an arcing taper to an inward-sloping rim. The aforementioned heel thrusts the totality of the bowl into visual prominence, canting the the chamber's walls forward and drawing focus to a crown of rugged plateau around the rim. A cheeked transition follows the bowl and marks the start of a trim shank that lifts upward and joins a demurely curved saddle stem of jet-black vulcanite. The shank-and-stem arrangement adds further dynamism to the shape's silhouette, as well as balance, all while promoting a comfortable smoking posture. Dressed in a crisp, inky sandblast, the stummel offers a wealth of attractive grain, with a mixture of growth rings and birdseye dotting the briar's surface. For an extra touch of visual flair, the rim and shank face are left smooth and stained a warm auburn, these polished sections of briar bookending the otherwise textured stummel.
