Lan Zhenjun: Smooth Asymmetric Volcano Tobacco Pipe

Had I only seen this design by Lan as a photo shot in profile, I would have thought it simply a Danish-influenced, low-slung and broad sort of Volcano. A lovely one, yes, but still that's what I would have guessed. Handling it in person, however, makes it clear there's a lot more going on, as Lan very much ran with an active, lively asymmetry shaping this briar — of the sort that would be on the dramatic end even in a Tokutomi-made Blowfish. Along with the strong swimming-motion curve that runs from bowl to stem bit, Lan also worked in a complementing and equally active roll to the form of the bowl, giving the shape as a whole a natural gesture of changing direction as well as moving forward under its own power.
