Lan Zhenjun: Smooth Tomato with Bamboo and Boxwood
Product Number: 002-749-0019
Lan Zhenjun is especially drawn to highly organic forms, inspired by Danish and Japanese design cues. Surprisingly, while the inclusion of bamboo here accentuates that organic penchant, this Tomato is the first piece we've received from the Chinese carver that features the knuckled medium. He's used it to great effect here — the accordion-wrinkles of the bamboo gradually tapering toward the transition and leading the eye to the plump bowl up front. Deeply bent and especially sinuous, this piece is defined by voluptuous curves and a rotund presence overall, though the overall size remains quite compact. Such an eccentric piece of bamboo calls to mind the pioneering work of Roman Kovalev of Doctor's Pipes, with Lan putting his own spin on the style. He's accented the shank end with a ring of boxwood, textured to resemble another knuckle of bamboo, and the bowl is finished expertly in a vibrant contrast stain, highlighting beautiful vertical grain and birdseye.-Truett Smith
