Lan Zhenjun: Sandblasted Asymmetric Bent Apple with Boxwood
Product Number: 002-749-0023
This bent Apple fits in well to Lan Zhenjun's portfolio, the Chinese carver influenced especially by Danish artisans and drawn to plump, organic designs. In profile, this piece is a fairly straightforward rendition — the oval curls gradually into the bowl, initiating its forward cant, while the shank's subtle flare toward the transition foreshadows the bowl's plumpness. Marked by a softly curving heel, the bowl fits perfectly in hand, though the compact size and light weight of this piece make it a comfortable clencher as well. The true genius and allure of this pipe, however, is evident only when viewed from the smoker's perspective — the bowl's trajectory leaning subtly upward and to the left for a smart dose of asymmetry. It's all dressed, then, in a ring grain-adorned sandblast, accented by a smooth-polished, chamfered rim and pale boxwood accent for contrast.-Truett Smith
