Lan Zhenjun: Sandblasted Cup and Ball with Silver
Product Number: 002-749-0024
Lars Ivarsson's signature Cup and Ball design has become a mainstay within artisan pipemaking with numerous artisans crafting unique renditions that pay tribute to the late Danish master. Here, Lan Zhenjun offers his own take on the revered form. The bowl is separated from the shank via the shape's characteristic ridgeline that wraps around the transition, the shank visually "cupping" the bowl. Said bowl is noticeably less bulbous or chubby compared to most renditions but is more Scoop-like in its shaping and gestural stance, the rim coming to a slight point along the fore. Often times carvers opt to finish their Cup and Ball renditions in a dual finish, leaving either the bowl or shank smooth to accentuate the transitional ridgeline, but here Zhenjun takes a more understated approach. The Chinese carver has sandblasted the entire stummel, coaxing out a concise ring-grain pattern underneath the jet-black stain. I'm particularly impressed by the exceptionally thick shank and its shaping, particularly how it gradually flares outward toward the downturned stem and subtly tapers as it meets the transition. A sterling silver band graces the shank end, adding an elegant touch to a beautiful piece and providing some brilliant contrast against the composition's dark color palette.- Jeffery Sitts
