Lan Zhenjun: Sandblasted Fish with Boxwood Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-749-0026
Chinese artisan Lan Zhenjun takes inspiration from the Danish masters and fashions pipes with an emphasis on clean lines and supple curves. This Blowfish is an excellent example of his craftsmanship and demonstrates his ability to imbue hearty designs with a sense of elegance. The Fish is a classic shape from the Danish artisan pipe-making tradition, marked by an Egg-like bowl and a teardrop shank that features a ridgeline across one flank. Due to compression along its fore and aft sides, the bowl takes on an oval appearance when viewed from above, and it rests upon a subtly lifted heel that hoists it upward at the fore of the composition. The broad oval shank glides out of the low-set transition and curls upward, and it is here that we see a touch of accenting asymmetry, with one flank of the shank featuring a the Fish's sharply defined ridgeline and the other sloping downward into a softly rounded edge. A crisp, earthy sandblast dresses the stummel and unveils rippling growth rings across either flank of the bowl, while an accent of boxwood adorns the shank end and provides a dose of warmth to the pipe's otherwise muted palette.--Davin Hylton
