Larry Roush: Partially Sandblasted Dublin with Silver (S4) (2474)
Product Number: 002-830-0016
Almost identical in shape and style to another Dublin we've received from Larry Roush, this piece, like that previous example, was crafted from a briar block that was aged for over a decade. The vintage blocks were smaller than the ones Roush typically uses, but after being inspired by traditional English and French shape chart standards, the American carver opted to fashion his own tribute to those classic designs of yesteryear. While this piece is remarkably smaller compared to his usual fare, it still contains Roush's expert engineering, muscular shaping, and signature silverwork.
Seen here is a compact, yet hearty take on the straight Dublin, featuring a stout, firm-heeled bowl up front. While it's impressively lightweight, this offering features plenty of robustness to its chamber walls and packs plenty of substance into such a small design. The sandblast is just what you'd expect from Larry — full of rich, crisp texture and displaying an endless amount of rippling ring grain around the poised bowl. The rim has been left smooth and stained a rich walnut hue, contrasting wonderfully against the stummel's jet-black color. And while cumberland mouthpieces have consistently been a favorite of Roush's, it's especially fitting on a piece that praises classic English pipemaking. It's all beautifully topped off with a bright band of sterling silver, adding just the right amount of elegance to an already exquisite piece.- Jeffery Sitts
