Larry Roush: Sandblasted Billiard with Silver (S3) (2483)
Product Number: 002-830-0021
While this Billiard is certainly on the smaller end of Larry Roush's sizing spectrum, it lacks nothing in terms of substance or stout proportions. This example was also crafted from a special batch of old-stock briar Larry had in his workshop for over a decade, waiting on just the right shape, or in this case, inspiration to come along. Roush has a deep fondness and admiration of vintage English and French factory-made pipes, and seeing as these aged blocks were also smaller in size than the American carver typically uses, it made perfect sense to craft a tribute of sorts to those old-school designs.
In terms of shaping, this Billiard features a Pot-like breadth to its bowl, plenty of meat to its chamber walls, and displays some additional plumpness around its base. And if there's one thing about Larry's work that doesn't get enough attention as it deserves, it's his masterful ability to read the structure of each briar block and know just how far he can push it when it comes to shaping and sandblasting. That is readily evident here as the sandblast is incredibly craggy, displaying endless waves of ring grain around the burly bowl, yet not distorting the piece's line work. A cumberland stem of red and black is tastefully paired to one of Roush's signature sterling silver bands, resulting in a stunning piece that balances ruggedness and refinement effortlessly.- Jeffery Sitts
