Larry Roush: Sandblasted Chubby Belge with Rope Finish Silver (S4) (2520)
Product Number: 002-830-0031
Larry Roush has a long history with pipe making, beginning with using his skills as a jeweler in the 1980s to beautify his own collection of pipes with accents of gold and silver, then learning to make pipes himself and becoming one of the most popular pipe makers anywhere. His style is distinctive and easily recognizable, often incorporating dramatic tapering of shank and stem in a long, exact movement from bowl to lip button, as can be seen with the Belge pictured here. Its ponderous bowl flows organically into the shank, with no cheeking of the bowl, in Horn-like, gradual curvature, emphasizing its plumpness and offering no distraction from the wonderful, deep sandblasting that is so admired in Larry's work. Positioned to provide horizontal lines in concert with the orientation of the bowl and shank, its undulating growth rings climb the bowl to the ever-so-slightly-and-to-the-point-of-near-imperceptibility domed rim.
The silverwork here is in Larry's "Rope Cut" technique, precisely detailed and offering a visual impression of twisted silver wrapping the shank end. I have a Roush with the twisted silver that I've had for 15 years or so, and I'll admit it always attracts my attention, even after years of smoking. The stem here is particularly enticing as well, in brown-and-black variegations with just a whisper of orange occasionally evident. Remarkable work from an iconic American carver, this piece deserves full consideration.- Chuck Stanion
