Larry Roush: Sandblasted Poker with Rope Finish Silver (S5) (2541)
Product Number: 002-830-0037
Wonderful growth rings traverse the bowl of this sandblasted Poker from Larry Roush, stacked up the bowl in a wavy, highly appealing manner. Well, there's a little more waviness than that, but it's nice for sure. There is no stain used here; it's a natural finish revealing the golden tones of great briar. The shank emerges from the bowl like a tree limb, as is appropriate with the Poker shape — the shank end accented by a sterling silver band, Larry's specialty, as he was a professional jeweler for many years. The tapered stem is of brindled vulcanite and presents deep, golden swirls that beautifully complement the stummel's hue. It's unusual to see a pipe from Larry that doesn't have an ever tapering shank-and-stem arrangement, but, again, the arrow-straight shaping of the shank here perfectly suits the Poker form.
With one of the most distinct North American carving styles anywhere, Larry's pipes are easily recognizable, and his proprietary curing process provides a neutral smoke, in my experience (I own several of them, all traditional shapes), with no break-in necessary. Larry's style falls well on the more substantial, muscular side of things, and his pipes have always smoked extraordinarily well so I keep buying them. Here's your chance.- Chuck Stanion
