Larry Roush: Partially Sandblasted Dublin with Rope Finish Silver (S5) (2452)
Product Number: 002-830-0038
This Dublin from Larry Roush is rendered in a bold, stolid manner, in line with the American carver's typical shaping aesthetic yet not without a forward-urging sense of momentum. The bowl here features a steady upward flare and forward cant, and the transition is quite defined and abrupt, adding firmness and structure to the design. Such an aesthetic fits perfectly with Larry's conventionally substantial style, making this iteration easily recognizable as the American artisan's work. Furthermore, the ever-tapering shank-and-stem combination is a distinct convention of Roush's pipes, evident in this piece and drawing the eye forward to the bowl. Lastly, Larry's use of dense sandblasts, sterling silver, and brindled vulcanite stems is readily manifested: The finish is textured and craggy, while the trim silver ring contrasts against both the stummel's palette and proportions, leading into a cumberland stem whose brown and red hues match the smooth-polished rim.-Truett Smith
