Larry Roush: Sandblasted Billiard with Silver (S4) (2453)
Product Number: 002-830-0039
Larry Roush enjoys fashioning pipes in extra-bold, muscular proportions, and nowhere is that more evident than in this straight Billiard. Overall, the form is quite standard — featuring a straight shank-and-stem combination and upright bowl — and the bowl-centric proportions liken to those often observed in Italian pipe making. As stated, the bowl dominates the profile in almost cylindrical form, marked by a crisp, flattened rim and firm heel that enables this piece to sit upright. Often times, Roush will taper the shank and stem consistently from transition to bit, but here the shank remains straight and untapered. Such a shaping cue caters to classic English and French renditions and makes for a starker contrast between bowl and shank. Especially indicative of Larry's style are the finish and color palette: A ruddy sandblast reveals the briar's wavy growth rings, and the sterling silver accent bespeaks Roush's deft skill as a former jeweler, leading into a brindled vulcanite stem of sand-and-ink hues.-Truett Smith
