Gregor Lobnik: Smooth Bent Apple with Briar
Product Number: 002-357-0096
This offering sees Gregor Lobnik finding the happy medium between overtly compact, abbreviated forms and elongated, more lithe renditions with flowing curvature. It's still compositionally minimalist, of course, as is par for the course for Lobnik, who favors simplicity of form as a means of highlighting the natural beauty of the briar's grain pattern.
The profile at play here implies a remarkable sense of momentum, reminding me a bit of a wasp with stinger at the ready. The silhouette is poised, and in no way feels visually weighed down by the significant heft added to the bowl structure. The bowl feels satisfyingly substantial in hand, neither too cumbersome nor too diminutive. The streaks of flame grain, highlighted by an intense crimson-tinged contrast stain, also serve to intensify the implied motion. As an added touch, Lobnik has also included a smart briar accent which complements the stellar grain pattern. A sensational piece.
