Gregor Lobnik: Partially Sandblasted Cup and Ball
Product Number: 002-357-0119
Renditions of the Cup and Ball shape tend to share the common cue of a transition framed by stepped ridge embracing an overtly round, plump bowl. Said bowl acts as the archtypal focal point, so it comes as no surprise that this rendition from Gregor Lobnik places a pronounced degree of emphasis on underlining that roundness by way of juxtaposition. Indeed, the Slovenian carver not only managed to fashion a fairly understated, and likewise somewhat compact rendition by way of shaping alone, but his use of dark sandblasted texture at the curling shank and vibrant contrast accentuating some excellent flame up front make for a truly splendid composition. For an added bit of playfulness, the steadily-tapered shank is somewhat compressed and oval-shaped, with the characteristic ridge coming to an asymmetric teardrop-like point at the heel. An awesome piece.- Daniel Bumgardner
