Gregor Lobnik: Smooth Acorn with Tagua Nut and Briar
Product Number: 002-357-0123
An almost Dublin-esque take on the Acorn shape, this fellow from Gregor Lobnik seems to call to mind the intrinsic subtlety and bold minimalism of the Slovenian carver's mentor, Peter Matzhold. There's a touch of jaunt about the heel, serving to adequately bolster the softly-rounded bowl, juxtaposed with a crown of wild, yet tight and craggy plateau. Enveloping this undulating excursion is a ring of flame to rival even Cash's masochistic fantasy, drawn from a minute well of birdseye at the heel. Dressed in one of Gregor's vibrantly powerful contrast finishes, the carver went one further here, adorning the piece with a shank extension of uniquely-smooth tagua nut, accenting the shank's end with a ringlet of warm-stained briar. The very hard carved palm mount makes for a satisfying degree of resistance to the mortise-tenon junction, while the long saddle bit serves rounds the profile out with panache.- Daniel Bumgardner
