Gregor Lobnik: Smooth Nosewarmer Apple with Tagua Nut
Product Number: 002-357-0125
Defining the term "nosewarmer," this Apple from Gregor Lobnik measures in at just under four inches in length. Despite such a compact size, though, it's not a piece that risks getting lost in the hand thanks to the Slovenian carver's penchant for robust proportions and muscular stoutness. The squat bowl offers enough briar to fit soundly among wrapped fingers, the plump curves making for a natural fit in hand, while the light weight ensures easy hands-free clenching as well.
The overall size may be diminutive and unassuming, but the grain is anything but: Dressed in one of Gregor's vibrant contrast stains, this briar boasts gorgeously concise strands of grain all around the bowl, leaving the underside studded completely in birdseye. Said swirling speckles are echoed, then, at the tagua nut* shank accent — the material characterized by a creamy hue dotted with dark spots, not unlike poppy seed salad dressing, and one that Lobnik has been experimenting with more and more. A beautiful, compact piece from Gregor, it fits naturally into the artisan's portfolio and is an exceptionally convenient piece, easily traveled with and also sitting sturdily upright.-Truett Smith
*Tagua nut comes from a species of palm tree called Phytelephas, which literally means "plant elephant" because of the seeds' resemblance to elephant ivory. These trees are found most predominately in southern Panama and the northern part of South America, including Peru, Ecuadar, Bolivia, Columbia, and northwestern Brazil.
