Gregor Lobnik: Smooth Bent Dublin with Bamboo (Lightning)

Product Number: 002-357-0127

Gregor Lobnik's Lightning grade designates the Slovenian carver's superlative work, and it's a stamp used sparingly. For reference, we've received only three Lightning-grade Lobnik pipes in the past decade — this bent Dublin being the fourth. An extremely compact piece, it features a stem that barely recurves at all, continuing the upward trajectory of the shank and resulting in an extra-short overall length. The shank's curve is informed by a tightly knuckled section of bamboo, and Gregor incorporated it deftly — the bamboo's curve seamlessly continued by the abbreviated shank, cohesively marrying the alternative material to the composition. From there, the bowl flares tall and proud, boasting thick insulating walls and a chamber that belies the pipe's overall size. Personally, I'm drawn most to the form's undercurve, the arc through the heel and bowl's fore perfectly matching that of the shank and bamboo. It provides a consistent parabola upon which the entire design is balanced and bespeaks Lobnik's impressive shaping skills. Exquisite shaping combined with a striking accent and marked by gorgeous grain, it's no wonder this piece received Gregor's highest grade.
