Luciano: Smooth Scoop (B)
Luciano has not produced many "Scoops" in their history, two in our catalog to be exact, and I hadn't even known of the shapes existence till this very moment (being an apprentice of sorts). But from what I can gather, the Scoop is a variation on the classic dublin, and when I say variation, what I mean is the bowl has simply been loped off--and also maybe with a slightly smoother transition from shank to bowl (although with all of the artistic liberty artisans are taking these days, its difficult to accurately categorize pipe shapes anymore). At any rate, although it does not have a corresponding classical shape, and despite being somewhat an unofficial one as well, the Scoop displays the Persaro School's neo-classical style--as in this case, the gesture of the pipe is elegantly simple, the bowl rising up somewhat like a soup ladle. It's easy to hold, and even easier on the eyes, baring a soothing gain, covered mostly by bursts of calm birdseye, with cross-grain running down its underbelly, all along its shank and accenting the rim in a cross-cut.
