Luiz Lavos: Smooth Fish
Product Number: 002-881-0002
Not to be confused with Blowfish or Fugu design, which is typically characterized by intricate paneling and cross-grain orientation, the Fish is a much more reserved pipe shape and one that was popularized by Danish masters Lars Ivarsson and Jess Chonowitsch. The form most often features a plump, Egg-like bowl, though exact bowl shape isn't a defining aspect of the Fish. Rather, a teardrop shank characterizes the design, resulting in a crisp ridgeline down one flank. That defining element allows some creative diversity across pipe makers, with some continuing the hard line all the way up the bowl to the rim, while others cause it to dissipate much earlier.
This rendition from Brazilian carver Luiz Lavos prioritizes the plump curves of the bowl over that accenting ridgeline, and Luiz has terminated the ridge at the transition, further defining that border and emphasizing cheeking along the bowl's lower flanks. Though based in Portugal, Lavos draws inspiration from Danish pipe design — the school's focus on elegant lines, balanced proportions, and compositional harmony fitting in well to Luiz's career as a graphic designer and past experience as a woodworker, before finding a niche in pipe making. As such, the Fish is a natural shape for Luiz, fitting well into his style, and this compact rendition is a lesson in harmonious lines and alluring curvature, the bowl's forward cant perfectly continuing the dynamism initiated by the subtle S-curve of shank and stem. It wears a dark, ruby stain and smooth finish, offering a reserved color palette that still reveals lovely grain when observed closer.-Truett Smith
