Luiz Lavos: Smooth Lumberman with Ivorite Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-881-0004
Luiz Lavos' design style draws influence from Danish pipe design and the Portugal-based, Brazilian artisan appreciates classic shapes that embody balanced proportions, clean lines, and elegantly reserved aesthetics. A graphic designer by trade, with extensive experience as a luthier and woodworker, Luiz's progression toward pipe making has been a naturally one that synthesized his artistic eye and love of quality craftsmanship, having been drawn to pipe making in particular for its balanced blend of handsome aesthetics and practical utility. Though he fashions a variety of designs, the Lumberman and Stack shapes are commonplace within Luiz's portfolio, and this Lumberman rendition testifies to his love for classic shapes and propensity toward Danish design cues, the bowl tapering toward the rim and exhibiting a supple, rounded nature that continues through the elongated, oval shank. Unlike the Canadian's abbreviated, tapered stem, the Lumberman's mouthpiece is of saddle variety, but still abbreviated, yet this piece from Luiz incorporates both styles, the stem being tapered but meeting the domed, Ivorite accent at the shank end in noticeable diminution that emulates the look of a saddle stem. Said accent offers pale contrast against the stummel's rich, chestnut stain, and the Ivorite is repeated as an inlay on the bowl's aft side, acted as a tasteful "beauty mark" of sorts. Cross grain and birdseye elevate the stummel further in wonderfully symmetrical orientation, and the color palette fits in well to Luiz's reserved and elegant style.-Truett Smith
