Luiz Lavos: Rusticated Apple Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-881-0005

Luiz Lavos' journey as a pipe maker testifies to the communal and collaborative nature of modern artisan pipe making, as well as the benefits of the internet and long-distance communication. Based in Portugal, the Brazilian pipe maker benefited from online communications with veteran carvers throughout the early stages of his career, trouble-shooting mechanical issues and absorbing all advice and feedback on his work. Furthermore, the global aspect of artisan pipe making has made carvers' work much more accessible to each other, as artisans share ideas and concepts. Also a graphic designer and woodworker, Luiz has a deep appreciation for Danish pipe design and its prioritization of minimalist forms and harmonious line work, so carvers like Tom Eltang, Jess Chonowitsch, and Hans "Former" Nielsen are significant influences in Lavos' personal aesthetic style. This rusticated Apple, then, is an homage to Former's signature Apple shape — a lightweight design fit for workhorse use yet not without inherent aesthetic charm. Putting his own spin on Former's design, Luiz added some more muscularity to the bowl and abbreviated the shank, pairing it to a tapered stem compared to Former's typical use of a saddle mouthpiece in his renditions. Lastly, Luiz's rustication here is considerably more narrow, emulating the look of sandblasted ring grain.
