Luiz Lavos: Smooth Blowfish Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-881-0007
Brazilian-born artisan Luiz Lavos currently resides in Portugal, and he cites as influences Tom Eltang and Hans "Former" Nielsen, among others, and often shapes his pipes with Danish design cues in mind. Here, the carver shows off his interpretation of the Blowfish design. It maintains the organic shape's iconic disc-like panels along the flanks with a wavy, concave rim and additional crisp facets running down the fore and aft. With clever line work and bulbous curves, the bowl is paired to a paneled shank topped by black, vulcanite stem. This forward-ebbing pipe is dressed in a dazzling honey-blonde stain that highlights a sea of birdseye on both flanks, and it's a handsome rendition of the artistic shape by an artisan with an intuitive eye toward shaping a pipe to fully illuminate its grain.
