Luiz Lavos: Smooth Bulldog with Horn Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-881-0008

Brazilian-born carver Luiz Lavos spent time as a child in his grandfather's workshop, attaining an appreciation for woodworking. His career later as a graphic designer, combined with his woodworking experience, soon gave way to pipe making. The artisan is now based in Portugal, crafting his pipes there. He has voiced an appreciation for Danish pipe design, citing Tom Eltang, Jess Chonowitsch, and Hans "Former" Nielsen among his influences.

This Bulldog design embodies minimalist, classic aesthetics. Clean and tidy of form, the bowl displays a wrapping ridgeline beneath the domed rim with a pronounced inner rim also seen. Not only does that chamfered rim aid in the loading of tobacco, it also softens the composition. The sharply angled heel at the fore segues into panels on the lower bowl of either flank, the middle ridgeline contributing to the crisp diamond shank. The carver has shaped the shank so that it tapers toward the saddle stem, a design cue that adds sleek dynamism to the the silhouette in profile.

A handsome pipe from a talented burgeoning carver, this piece is dressed in a rich auburn contrast stain that elevates the fiery licks of flame engulfing the bowl. A wealth of birdseye dots the rim and underside of the pipe and it's all further accentuated by a shapely band of horn at the stem base.
