Luiz Lavos: Rusticated Apple Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-881-0010
Brazilian carver Luiz Lavos is a man of many talents, including general woodworking and restoring vintage arcade machines, but perhaps his most recognized and well-represented skill is that of pipe carving. With tutelage from Sabina Santos, mechanical advice from Premal Chheda, and extensive finishing guidance from Hans "Former" Nielsen, it's no wonder that he has consistently been able to produce beautiful artisan pieces such as this Apple.
This design is something we've seen from Lavos before and is an homage to Former's signature rusticated design, but, given the connection between the two men, it's not difficult to see why, especially when the design is so compelling. Luiz follows the Danish functionalist school of thought, prioritizing classic shapes that showcase clean line work and refined forms over more embellished designs, all while keeping a focus on the smoking properties of the pipe itself.
This Apple exemplifies that ideal through its deceptive simplicity, the expertise of Lavos shining through most prominently in the supple cheeking of the transition and the domed shank end, both of which provide some softness to a rather muscular rendition of the iconic shape. The bowl is hearty but supply rounded, and the heel it sits upon pronounced but not sharp, the low-set waistline informing the taper of the briar to the chamfered rim. The rustication dressing the stummel is made up of two sets of concentric rings, one set on the bowl, starting at the heel and rising to the rim, the other on the shank, starting at the transition and stopping right before the end, leaving a length of briar to be finished smooth.-John McElheny
