Luiz Lavos: Smooth Acorn with Horn Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-881-0011
Luiz Lavos' appreciation for woodworking began as a child, when the Brazilian artisan spent time in his granddad's substantial workshop. A career in graphic arts, combined with that early appreciation for wood and its creative uses soon led to pipe making. Now Luiz has turned his attention and substantial talents toward this endeavor, citing Tom Eltang, Jess Chonowitsch, and Hans "Former" Nielsen among his influences.
This Acorn embodies clean lines, supple curves and a minimalist, highly functional aesthetic. It's also the first Acorn design we've seen from the carver. The bowl is tall, bulbous and forward canting, offering the softly rounded rim and high waistline of the traditional form. Rather than tapering toward a spur, however, this piece quickly diminishes toward a small, angled, and flattened heel. The low-set transition is followed by a slender, subtly expanding shank. It's topped by a hand-cut, ebony-hued vulcanite stem with an accenting band of horn at its base, all resulting in an organic, striking profile. Wearing a light honey-blonde stain that shows off captivating wisps of flame grain across all flanks, this Acorn is a fine example of the artisan's shaping and finishing acumen.-Angela Robertson
