Luiz Lavos: Smooth Billiard with Horn Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-881-0015

Luiz Lavos' interest in woodworking commenced at an early age, when he began learning about the craft from his grandfather, who owned a prominent workshop in Brazil. That early interest has served Lavos well, the proud Brazilian carver crafting pieces in the minimalist Danish aesthetic similar to that of Tom Eltang, Jess Chonowitsch, and Hans "Former" Nielsen, all of whom he cites as among his influences.

WE haven't received many straight Billiards from Lavos, making this piece a welcome sight. The bowl offers Danish shaping cues in the gentle rounding of heel and sides, along with a graceful taper to the rim. It's poised at the end of an abbreviated, round shank that's commended by a stunning horn extension, the flaring accent's tones contrasting the handsome, auburn contrast stain covering the stummel. The grain beneath is certainly eye-catching, while the hand-cut mouthpiece is engineered for superior smoking comfort. Another win by the accomplished artisan.
